Matt Beck - Project Manager
Matt Beck was a bit upset when his wife asked him to move to Alberta. Little did he know the project he was about to get involved with.
After enrolling in the Masters of Environmental Design program at University of Calgary, Professor Tang Lee put him in touch with Mark Blackwell and Halley O'Byrne, and they started organizing a bid for the 2009 Solar Decathlon together. Initially starting as Co-Chair with Mark, Matt was hired by the team as Project Manager after the team was accepted into the competition. He came to the team with experience building small residential PV systems and a knack for solving all kinds of problems on the fly.
Matt has a Bachelor of Science in Global Resource Systems from University of British Columbia as well as experience serving on several non-profit boards.
He is also a passionate outdoorsman, moonlighting as a big mountain ski coach, mountaineer and boatsman. Matt is extremely passionate about the opportunity the Solar Decathlon provides for raising public awareness about residential solar energy generation and its many applications. Once the competition is over and he can put some much needed time into finishing his masters degree, he intends to start a business that will develop and produce net-zero energy homes for the public.
